A Lot Happened in May–Catch Up On What You Missed
May was a substantial month with important progress made in growing jobs, investing in our veterans, and limiting property tax increases
Before we step into June, let’s take a moment to reflect on the important issues and events we addressed in the month of May.
Investing in Jobs
Wiregrass State Legislators recently presented a $3.94 million check to the Industrial Development Board of the City of Dothan from the State Industrial Development Authority. This generous funding, made possible by the 2023 SEEDS legislation, will assist in acquiring the 446-acre Westgate Supersite.
In addition to this state support, the City of Dothan is contributing $3 million, and Houston County is proudly participating with a $500,000 commitment.
This promising site has the potential to become home to an advanced manufacturing facility, bringing hundreds, if not thousands, of jobs to Houston County residents.
Property Tax Cap Brings More Stability for Property Owners
The state legislature recently adjourned, and one bill that could significantly impact your finances is HB-75. Now signed into law, this bill caps annual property tax increases at 7%.
I want to extend my gratitude to the legislators for collaborating with us to address concerns with earlier versions of the bill. The 7% cap represents a balanced compromise, offering stability for homeowners while ensuring local governments can still adequately fund law enforcement and other essential services.
To be clear, property tax rates will not change. The cap addresses the increases that come from a rise in property values, not rates.
Big Improvements at the Historic Dupree School House
I recently visited residents near Ashford who are revitalizing the Historic Dupree School House, rescuing it from the brink of ruin. This remarkable building is one of the few surviving small, country schoolhouses from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Kudos to Steven Smith for his outstanding leadership on this project! Phase 1, which focused on saving the structure, is now complete. Fundraising for Phase 2 is underway, which will expand the historic building and transform it into a functional space for community meetings and even a polling location.
Land Gifted to Support Veterans
The Houston County Commission has gifted a historic parcel of land, owned for over 70 years, to the American Legion Post 12. This land, once a WWII POW camp, will now serve as a dedicated facility for our veterans, fulfilling a long-standing need for the American Legion. Learn more about this significant donation on WDHN’s website.
Encroachment Policy Reminder
We recently reminded residents that brick mailboxes and other non-breakaway structures are not allowed on county right of way. While enforcing this policy isn't enjoyable, it's essential for maintaining the federal funds that support our road system. More importantly, it ensures our streets are safer for drivers, which is why the federal government enforces this rule.
