More Jobs, Better Recreation, No Local Taxes: The Benefits of the Lodging Tax Proposal
On November 5th, you’ll have a chance to vote on a proposal for a tax increase—but this is a tax you won’t have to pay. It’s a small tax that will directly benefit our children and local economy. Here’s how…
Lodging Tax Proposal
The proposal is for a 1% tax on hotel rooms and Airbnb rentals in Houston County. The key point? This tax will be paid by visitors staying in our local accommodations—not by you.
The funds raised through this tax will be legally dedicated to just two things: economic development (which means more jobs) and recreation (which benefits our children). By law, the Commission won’t be able to use these funds for anything else.
Economic Development Means Jobs
Economic development is all about creating jobs. The Commission often has opportunities to attract businesses and job-producing projects to our county. These are the kinds of projects that strengthen our local economy and provide more opportunities for our citizens.
And when more jobs come to Houston County, more people will visit, stay in our hotels, and help fuel this cycle of growth. So, the very businesses contributing to the tax will see a benefit in return.
Investing in Our Kids’ Recreation
While job creation is important, the majority of these funds will be invested in recreation—specifically, projects that get our kids off the couch and onto the field. We’ll be able to enhance youth sports programs that benefit children throughout Houston County.
The Sad State of Affairs
As you can see with the photos below, many facilities could use a helping hand.
$2.6 Million for Youth Sports
Once the tax is established, we plan to borrow against the revenue stream to jump-start youth sports projects immediately. Over $500,000 will be invested in each of the four key areas that play year-round organized youth sports: Rehobeth, Cottonwood, Wicksburg, and Ashford.
Additionally, we’ll allocate over $600,000 to help the City of Dothan build a track and field complex. This facility will benefit students from across Houston County who participate in track and related activities.
$867,000 for Other Recreation Projects
After youth sports projects are funded, there will be $867,000 available for other recreational needs throughout Houston County, including the City of Dothan. For example, $200,000 has already been earmarked for Dothan’s popular pickleball complex.
Continuous Funding Stream
Based on current market conditions and falling interest rates, we expect to be able to pay back the bond while providing a continuous funding stream for recreation improvements and maintenance at the same time.
By supporting this lodging tax, you’re voting to improve our community without increasing your own tax burden. It’s an investment in our children’s future and in the economic growth of Houston County.
